The legendary battleship herself was built on January 29, 1944 in the Brooklyn Naval Yard. Although the Iowa-class was supposed to be have two more ships, they were cancelled as the war was already ending at that point. Missouri served with the US Navy's Pacific Fleet together with her sisters, participating in operations against the Japanese. Missouri was used as Admiral William Halsey's flagship during this time. After dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan, Missouri and her sister ship, Iowa, arrived at Tokyo Bay with the US and British Pacific Fleet to prepare for the signing of Japan's instrument of surrender. During the ceremony, General Douglas MacArthur gave a speech saying, "It is my earnest hope—indeed the hope of all mankind—that from this solemn occasion a better world shall emerge out of the blood and carnage of the past, a world founded upon faith and understanding, a world dedicated to the dignity of man and the fulfillment of his most cherished wish for freedom, tolerance, and justice." Her deck was decorated with a 31-star American flag that had been taken ashore by Commodore Matthew Perry in 1853 after his squadron of "Black Ships" sailed into Tokyo Bay to force the opening of Japan's ports to foreign trade. The flag was displayed in a wood-framed case secured to the bulkhead overlooking the surrender ceremony.

AFter the war, she was deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean to calm tensions between Turkey, Greece, Italy, and the Soviet Union. She became the first battleship to host a helicopter detachment, operating two Sikorsky HO35-1 machines for utility and rescue work in 1948. Throughout the latter half of the 1940s, the various service branches of the United States had been reducing their inventories from their World War II levels. For the Navy, this resulted in several vessels of various types being decommissioned and either sold for scrap or placed in one of the various US Navy reserve fleets scattered along the East and West Coasts of the US.. As part of this contraction, three of the Iowa-class battleships had been de-activated and decommissioned; however, President Truman refused to allow her to be decommissioned. Against the advice of then Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson, Secretary of the Navy John Sullivan, and Chief of Naval Operations Louis Denfield, Truman ordered Missouri to be maintained with the active fleet partly because of his fondness for the battleship and partly because the battleship had been christened by his daughter Margaret Truman. Missouri served in the Korean War and served as flagship of Rear Admiral Allen Edward Smith, during which she participated in shore bombardments against North Korean and Communist Chinese forces. After the war she was decommissioned on February 26, 1955. In 1984, she was reactivated for President Reagan's 600-ship Navy. It was during this time that she was upgraded to her current loadout. During her recommissioning ceremony, Margaret Truman gave a short speech to the ship's crew and ended it saying, "now take care of my baby". Her remarks were met with rounds of sincere applause from the crew. Four months later Missouri departed from her new home port of Long Beach for an around-the-world cruise, visiting Pearl Harbor Hawaii; Sydney, Hobart, and Perth, Australia; Diego Garcia; the Suez Canal; Istanbul, Turkey; Naples, Italy; Rota, Spain; Lisbon, Portugal; and the Panama Canal. She became the first American battleship to circumnavigate the globe since Theodore Roosevelt's "Great White Fleet" 80 years before – a fleet which included her ancestor, USS Missouri (BB-11). On July 1, 1989, while berthed at Pier D, the music video for Cher's If I Could Turn Back Time was filmed aboard Missouri and featured the ship's crew.

Missouri and her sister, Wisconsin, took part in the Persian Gulf War where they used their brand new equpment for the first and last time. After this war, Missouri started her service as a museum ship in January 29, 1999. 43 years later, Missouri was secretly selected as the first warship to be conveted into a ship girl as part of the testing stages of the Shipgirl Program. It was on that same day that she became the first warship girl to engage the "Abyssal Fleet" during the Battle of Pearl Harbor...

BIO
An outgoing girl, Missouri appears to be the most "normal" of the Iowa-class shipgirls. She is a self-described "nerd", her evidence being her extensive knowledge and love of pop culture. It has been observed that she has a supportive, motherly type of demeanor when working with the other girls. In return, many of the younger missile destroyers call her "Mom", which she finds amusing and wholeheartedly accepts as a nickname. She is also very close with Arizona, being her de-facto guardian and "big sister" figure ever since she was permanently moored at Pearl Harbor.

Many of the Japanese shipgirls are heavily intimidated by her despite her friendliness, which is confirmed to be caused by the fact that she is battleship on which the Japanese surrendered. There are Japanese shipgirls who she has befriended, and who also call her "Miso-chan", another nickname she likes. Her relations with the foreign shipgirls can be described as consisting of utmost respect due to her legendary status. something she finds awkward.

Missouri also has a significant amount of proficiency in speaking Japanese, as does her sister, Iowa. Her attire is apparently based off the Japanese fashion trend known as "zettai ryouki", which she likes. She also has some knowledge of the martial art, "Aikido", in which her skill is on par with its 6th degree, citing her reason for her knowledge was the movie "Under Siege" starring Steven Seagal.
